Ferrari out of Formula 1 in 2012?
Ferrari sent a warning that they will not compete in Formula 1 after the 2012 season if the competition will not get over the problems with technology.
Formula 1 teams were a step away from leaving the competition this summer, several months after a conflict with the International Automobile Federation. Eventually, the two sides have reached an agreement on reducing the costs, by signing the Concorde Agreement, the document that governs Formula 1.
However, Ferrari has warned that they will leave Formula 1 for Le Mans after 2012, the year the Concorde Agreement expires, if the competition will not benefit from radical changes in sports matters, technological and economic.
“I want Formula 1 to improve until 2012, when we will sign a new Concorde Agreement, and if this does not happen we will find motivation elsewhere. I was at Le Mans and I was impressed,” said Luca di Montezemolo , chairman of Ferrari, in a press event held at Christmas.
Ferrari official explained the three main areas that have to be changed radically over the next two years: the use of technologies that can be implemented on street cars, reducing costs through measures that will not affect the sporty look and boost manufacturers to compete in the F1.
“First we must decide where we position the Formula 1. I think F1 needs to be surrounded by extreme technology, performance and research.
Second, we need to reduce the costs without losing the elements of interest. For example, carbon brakes can not be used in the automotive industry and can accept a standard gearbox without F1 to lose features. But not to allow Felipe Massa (No – Scuderiei Ferrari pilot who has suffered a serious accident in July at the Hungaroring) to test a F1 car is against the nature of sport. For years we have tested every day, and now we can not test at all.
Thirdly, I don’t think that the replace of manufacturers with those we do not know if they will be prepared is a good idea” added the Italian.
“Is it right to compete at 14:00 or 15:00 on a summer afternoon? Football is played at 16:00 or even 17:00 to 21:00. Is it fair to have races that last two hours? Maybe they are too long. We must have tickets so expensive? Today, a young man with his girlfriend can fly around the world for an amount less than the best seats in the stands at the Grand Prix of Italy. Is it fair? ” Montezemolo wonders…
